Five bible highlighting ideas:
One way to use the highlighter set is to highlight Bible verses or phrases that speak to you personally. As you read the scriptures, be mindful of the passages that stand out to you or resonate with your past or current experiences.
You can also make notes in the margins of your bible or in a separate bible study journalto further reflect on why those scriptures are meaningful to you. This practice can help you better understand the word and its teachings while applying its lessons to your life.
- Color-Coding:
- Use different colors for different themes, like yellow for promises, blue for prayer, and green for commands.
- Keep a color key to remember what each color means (see the bible highlighting system below).
- Margin Notes:
- Write short notes or summaries in the margins next to bible verses.
- Underline and Circle:
- Underline important phrases or circle keywords.
- Sticky Notes:
- Use sticky notes for longer notes or questions in the margins.
- Transparent sticky notes help you see the text underneath.
- Draw Symbols:
- Create simple symbols for themes (like a heart for love or a star for important verses).

what do you highlight in the bible?
Bible highlighters are a great way to reveal deeper truths is a powerful way as you study the bible. As you read the scriptures, seek related passages that reinforce and expand upon the highlighted verses.
For example, highlighting verses about forgiveness can help you examine what forgiveness really is. You can compare multiple passages about forgiving others, yourself, and God’s forgiveness. This practice can help you to see the Bible as a cohesive whole, rather than a series of isolated stories or passages.

What is a good Bible to take notes in?
I love using different bibles while I study but I do find that using a bible with wide margins are great for taking notes and highlighting. Below are a few suggestions that you can use that can make bible study more engaging.
illustrating bible
What I love about the Illustrating Bible are the extra-wide margins for taking notes! With the additional space, you can draw, highlight Bible verses, and jot down notes with ease.
Interleaved Bible
I am currently using the Interleaved Bible for my study and note-taking! What makes the Interleaved Bible unique is that every other page is blank, providing plenty of space for notes. Check out my video review here!
- ESV Journaling Bible, Interleaved Edition
- NKJV, Interleaved Bible, Journal Edition (bible pictured below)
single column bible
Another great option for journaling and note-taking is single-column Bibles. These Bibles are designed with a single column of text, leaving extra room in the margins for notes. I prefer having a wide or extra-wide margin for my notes!
- CSB Notetaking Bible, Floral Cloth Over Board, Black Letter, Wide Margins
- ESV Journaling Bible
- NIV, Artisan Collection Bible

The benefits of using a Bible highlighter set for journaling are numerous. By cultivating a deeper understanding of God’s word, highlighting passages, and making connections between verses, you can take your faith to new heights.
Investing in a set of highlighters can help you on your journey of spiritual growth and discovery.
As the writer of Hebrews wrote, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12, NIV).
Let your highlighter be your sword and your journal be your heart, and let God’s word guide you on your path.
don't forget...you are loved!
